A 7.5 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan, the strongest quake in 25 years.

Taipei, May 3, 2025  — A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan early Thursday morning, leaving a trail of destruction, chaos, and fear across the island. It was the strongest quake recorded in the past 25 years, local authorities reported. The epicenter was located in the east of the island, near Hualien County, a mountainous and seismically active area.

The earthquake occurred at 4:16 a.m. local time and reached a depth of just 12 kilometers, increasing its intensity and destructive effects. The quake was felt across the island, including in the capital, Taipei, where tall buildings swayed violently for several seconds. Taiwanese authorities immediately activated emergency protocols and urged the public to stay away from damaged structures.

Victims and material damage

So far, official figures indicate at least 18 people dead and more than 900 injured. However, the death toll is feared to rise as rescue efforts progress. Dozens of buildings have collapsed or suffered severe structural damage, especially in Hualien and parts of the south of the country. Rescue teams are working against the clock to locate people trapped in the rubble.

Taipei Airport temporarily suspended operations due to cracks in the runways, while several sections of the subway and high-speed rail were also affected. Classes were suspended nationwide, and many areas were left without electricity or drinking water.

Government response and international aid

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen declared a state of emergency in the hardest-hit regions and mobilized thousands of troops to assist with rescue and humanitarian aid efforts. “The safety of our citizens is our priority. We will do everything possible to treat the injured and rebuild what was lost,” she stated at a press conference.

Several countries, including Japan, South Korea, the United States, and the European Union, expressed their solidarity with Taiwan and offered technical and humanitarian assistance. The International Red Cross also announced the dispatch of medical aid and emergency supplies.

A reminder of the seismic threat

Taiwan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense seismic activity. Thursday’s earthquake has been compared to the devastating 1999 earthquake, which measured 7.6 magnitude and left more than 2,400 dead. Geological experts have warned that this event could be followed by significant aftershocks in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the Taiwanese population is trying to recover from the emotional and material impact of the disaster. “I’ve never felt anything so strong. My house shook like it was made of paper,” said a visibly shaken Hualien resident.
